I'm so glad you're here for earnest, too! You can take the ex-mormon out of 10,000 hours of intensive sunday school but you can't take the 10,000 hours of intensive sunday school out of the ex-mormon, for better or worse<3 <3
I love this. Including people is obviously very important for the person being included, but nothing makes me feel warmer inside than when I notice someone is left out and I pull them in.
So agree on the impact of Covid on social graces. I feel like I have become rusty in a lot of my reflexive social behaviours - for many reasons (I am tired! Therapy has taught me that part of my hypervigilence around making sure everyone around me is ok is a trauma response to my stressful childhood!). And yet, I'd like to return to some of those behaviours, this time fuelled more by basic human decency than anxiety.
So true that it's not just charity! Last June I was at a workshop with my wife and a friend. There was a very newly out queer person there, clearly very shy, socially anxious and alone. As we were leaving to go for lunch afterwards, my wife casually invited that person to join us. She's now one of my closest friends 🩷✨ Presumably for Mormons it's partly about converting people? But it can work for any kind of community building!
1. Did your roller skating rink have a section in the middle of the floor that had seats and was sort of semi-private (a safe space for boners I imagine?)? My sibling and I both remember this feature from our childhood skating rink but think it might actually be uncommon.
As the only child of two VERY social parents, I learned these tricks as a child but fell out of practice throughout my 20s and early 30s. It was probably a combination of self consciousness and getting comfortable in group settings. This was a great reminder!
Here for the Zamboni content but here too for the earnest ex-Mormon goodness, baby. <3

Oh i love this! And yes, sometimes trying to take care of everyone is too much, and sometimes a little sweetness and thoughtfulness goes a long way💖💖

Were you a fan of the winnie the pooh books? This is one of my favorite birthday thoughts:
So Owl wrote… and this is what he wrote:
HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH THUTHDA BTHUTHDY.
Pooh looked on admiringly.
“I’m just saying ‘A Happy Birthday’,” said Owl carelessly.
“It’s a nice long one,” said Pooh, very much impressed by it.
