These are great-sounding recommendations! I wonder if Ed Yong’s books would also do the trick for you? An Immense World is a thicker book filled with facts about animal senses. I don’t think it would work for me, since I’d like to work in this field, but for others, it might be a good choice!
I shall add these to my wishlist! Currently the only thing that gets me to sleep before dawn is doing two hours of hot yoga before bed, but much as I love it that amount of time just isn't sustainable.
I'll chuck out anything by Michel Foucault, particularly his stuff on sex and power. Thoroughly fascinating, thoroughly soporific.
I, too, startle awake around 3AM like this and read to get back to sleep. For me, it's very anxiety-based and doesn't happen if I'm in a more chill state-of-mind... Anyways, the reason I love reading on a Kindle besides my brain thinking, "no maddy, you don't need to look at your phone. this too is a screen" is that there is a backlight. I read comfortably in relative darkness all the time.
Maddy i am taking this as a sign from the universe; you're the second person in the last week to recommend a kindle to me!! i'd been avoiding it because i was being ONLY PHYSICAL BOOKS!!! about it, but i got to hold one and use it recently and damn, it was very cool!
SO EXCITED FOR YOU!! Also, your library probably has an app called Libby where you can check out ebooks.
I actually cried the first time I read on an e-reader because it allowed me to read without interruption and distractiojn for the first time since I was CHILD.
