Ooh, I really like all the exceptions for complimenting someone in public! I think the "no body parts" one is especially good; you never know if a body part is a feature someone dislikes or feels dysphoric/dysmorphic about, so it's best to just give a general compliment instead, like you suggested!
Question: would you include hair/hairstyle in the "no body parts" rule? I've generally found that people tend to be more open to having their hair complimented, but I know that some people are sensitive about theirs, or think they're having a bad hair day when they look like a goddex, etc.
Another question (please help me oh god): on the topic of paying, is it okay to be more forthright about who's paying before the date/outing even happens? I've been burned just in friend circles alone due to bad communicators who suddenly and unexpectedly Venmo requested me the next day for something they seemed to be covering. Is it tacky to hash out that detail explicitly and before the event?
Healing thoughts for your father on this gayest of weeks!!
Thank you!! For the hair Q: I just... wouldn't? Not until you know them better, then you can scream WHY IS YOUR HAIR SO COOL at them all you want!
For the paying Q: Totally OK to be more forthright!! I wish we all were, honestly. I think it's fine to openly ask "OK so who's paying for this? Do you want me to venmo you now?" or say something like "Guys the uber xl was $48, so it's $24 each" and just send the request. Hashing it out beforehand is helpful for everyone, especially that one friend who ALWAYS pays for the uber and no one ever pays back!
I treasure every column in this series in my overly polite queer little heart 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
